Old Fashioned Hot Chocolate

2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate

1 1/3 cups boiling water

1 quart milk, scalded

1/3 cup sugar

Pinch of salt

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Marshmallows or whipped cream

Place chocolate in top of a double boiler; bring water to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cook until chocolate melts. Gradually add 1 1/3 cups boiling water, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; set aside.

Combine scalded milk, sugar, and salt in a saucepan; add chocolate mixture, stirring well. Cook over low heat; stir in vanilla. If desired, top with marshmallows or whipped cream.

Makes 6 cups.
